Beirut- Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY) is the only operational commercial airport in Lebanon which is located in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, 9 kilometers from the city center.

It is the hub for Lebanon’s national carrier, Middle East Airlines (MEA), and was the hub for the Lebanese cargo carrier TMA cargo and wings of Lebanon before their respective collapses.

It is the main port of entry into the country along with the port of Beirut.

The Character of Beirut

The largest city in Lebanon is Beirut has a population of 2.4 million. It is located at the base of the Lebanon Mountains on the Mediterranean coast. Beirut is a city of complex contradictions, mixing the wealthy and sophisticated with the locals.

Climate

Due to its coastal position, temperatures in Beirut are cooled by the sea during the hot summer months, giving the city a Mediterranean climate with warm days and nights. Both spring and autumn are warm. The summer is long, hot, and humid. The predominant wind direction is from the west throughout the afternoon and evening, blowing in from the Mediterranean; at night, it switches to an offshore direction, blowing from the land out to sea.

Tourism

Both visitors from the Arab world and the West travel to Beirut. It is ranked the ninth greatest city in the world ranking. It was placed first on The New York Times’ 2009 list of “44 places to go.” The economy of Beirut has historically depended heavily on the tourist sector, which continues to be a significant source of income for both the city and Lebanon as a whole today.
