BER or Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt has a long history, an interesting backstory to its construction and official opening, and many controversies. It was designed during the early 1990s to take the place of Berlin’s Tempelhof, Tegel and Schönefeld air terminals in 2006. But technical and planning problems led to several postponements, and it only opened several more times. At last, in the October of 2020 the BER started its operation formally and incorporated nearly all the infrastructures of Schönefeld with Terminal 5. Personally, I find that the Willy Brandt Airport is quite symbolic because it is named after West German Chancellor Willy Brandt responsible for opening to the east thus representing the reunited Berlin; the airport also has a capacity to provide a gateway to other major European cities in the future while reflecting both the Berliner efficiency and a history of the city.
