Some destinations have always attracted a certain kind of traveler — someone who values the quality of the experience over the convenience of the familiar. St. Barts, Santorini, Bora Bora, Kyoto, the Amalfi Coast. These places are not trending because of social media. They have been the consistent choices of people who travel seriously for decades, and they remain at the top of the list in 2026 for the same reasons they always have been: exceptional settings, genuine luxury, and the sense that arriving there means something.

This guide covers nine of the most consistently chosen jetsetter destinations in the world, what makes each one worth the journey, and how to make the airport experience at each end of the trip as seamless as the destination itself.

St. Barts, Caribbean

St. Barts operates on its own terms. The island has no large resort chains, no cruise ship ports, and no mass-market tourism infrastructure — by design. What it has instead is a concentration of exceptional private villas, some of the best beach restaurants in the Caribbean, and a social atmosphere that is genuinely relaxed despite its reputation for exclusivity. Gustavia’s harbour fills with superyachts in high season, but the beaches — Saline, Gouverneur, Colombier — remain unhurried regardless. Access is via a small connecting flight from Sint Maarten or St. Martin, which means the journey itself filters for travellers who are serious about being there.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini, Greece

Santorini’s reputation runs slightly ahead of its reality in summer,  July and August are genuinely crowded in Oia and Fira. But the shoulder months of May, June, and September offer the same caldera views, the same extraordinary sunsets, and a version of the island that is significantly more pleasant to be in. The island’s best experiences are concentrated in a small area: cave hotels carved into the clifftops, private pools overlooking the volcanic caldera, and a wine culture built on indigenous Assyrtiko grapes grown in volcanic soil. Santorini Airport (JTR) handles direct flights from most major European hubs in season.

Best suited to: Couples and honeymooners, and anyone for whom the sunset view from a clifftop pool is the entire point of the trip.

Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is where Japan’s aesthetic identity is most concentrated and most legible. The city has 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and a preserved geisha district in Gion that still functions as it has for centuries. The best visits are structured around a few specific experiences rather than an itinerary of checkboxes: a morning at Fushimi Inari before the crowds arrive, a private tea ceremony in a machiya townhouse, a kaiseki dinner in one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants. Spring cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn foliage (November) are the peak periods — extraordinary to see, and genuinely busy. Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the main gateway, approximately 75 minutes by express train.

Best suited to: Travellers who want cultural depth rather than resort luxury, and those visiting Japan for the first time who want its most concentrated expression.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast’s 50 kilometres of cliffside road connect a string of villages — Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, Praiano — each distinct in character. Positano is the most photographed and the most visited; Ravello sits higher up with extraordinary views and far fewer tourists; Praiano is where those who know the coast well tend to stay. The practical challenge is the road itself, which is narrow, winding, and congested in summer — most serious visitors stay in one or two locations and explore by boat rather than car. The nearest major airports are Naples (NAP) and Rome Fiumicino (FCO), with private transfers or helicopter transfers to the coast.

Best suited to: Those who prioritize scenery and coastal atmosphere, and who are happy to trade easy logistics for one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora’s lagoon is one of the most genuinely extraordinary natural settings in the world, the water is that specific shade of turquoise that photographs suggest is edited but is entirely real. The overwater bungalow format was essentially invented here, and several of the island’s properties remain benchmarks for the category. The destination is genuinely remote, most routes involve a connecting flight via Papeete on Tahiti,  which keeps the visitor numbers manageable and the atmosphere unhurried. It is not a destination for exploring; it is a destination for being completely still in an exceptional place.

Best suited to: Honeymooners and couples seeking complete seclusion, and anyone for whom the journey itself ,  long-haul flights included, is an acceptable price for arriving somewhere this unusual.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona rewards travelers who go deeper than its most famous sights. Sagrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter are worth seeing, but the city’s real character is in its neighborhoods — Example’s modernist architecture, Gràcia’s village-within-a-city atmosphere, Barceloneta’s beach culture that manages to feel genuinely local despite its proximity to the tourist center. The restaurant scene is exceptional: Barcelona has more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than almost any other city in Europe. El Prat Airport (BCN) is well-connected from most major international hubs, and the city center is 30 to 40 minutes from the terminal.

Best suited to: First-time and returning visitors alike — the city has enough depth to reward multiple trips without feeling like it is repeating itself.

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is sensory and slightly disorienting on first arrival — the medina is intentionally labyrinthine, the souks are loud and persistent, and the city moves at its own pace regardless of what visitors expect. This is precisely what makes it compelling. The riad experience — staying in a traditional house built around a central courtyard, which may appear modest from the outside and be extraordinary within — is one of the more genuinely distinctive hotel formats in the world. Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum are essential visits. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most of its character is intact. Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is a 15-minute drive from the city centre.

Best suited to: Travelers who want somewhere genuinely different from European and Caribbean luxury, and those who appreciate the experience of navigating an unfamiliar culture at close range.

Maldives

The Maldives is one of the few destinations where the resort is the destination ,  the 1,200 islands are spread across 90,000 square kilometers of the Indian Ocean, and most visitors choose a single property and stay there. The snorkeling and diving are genuinely exceptional: the coral reefs are among the healthiest in the world, and large marine life,  manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks,  is regularly encountered in open water rather than just in protected zones. Arriving involves a flight to Malé (MLE) followed by either a speedboat transfer (30 to 90 minutes) or a seaplane (15 to 45 minutes), depending on the resort’s location. The seaplane journey over the atolls is, in itself, extraordinary.

Best suited to: Those who want pure marine environment and genuine seclusion, and couples for whom a single extraordinary property is the entire holiday.

business trip to new york

New York City, USA

New York works differently from every other city on this list — it does not offer seclusion or natural beauty, and comfort here is earned through knowing where to go rather than through the resort format. The hotel landscape ranges from the classic (The Mark, The Carlyle, The Pierre on the Upper East Side) to the architecturally ambitious (1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, The Ned NoMad). The restaurant scene is genuinely world-class across every cuisine and price point. The cultural offer , Met, MoMA, Lincoln Center, Broadway, dozens of gallery districts,  is unmatched. JFK and Newark both serve the city; JFK is the primary international gateway. Fast-track and meet and greet services at JFK can meaningfully reduce arrival time through immigration, which runs long during peak periods.

Best suited to: Urban travelers and first-time visitors to the US, and those using New York as an anchor for a broader East Coast itinerary.
