With the rising number of corona virus cases in the USA, the travel and aviation industry has taken health security measures to battle the pandemic and mitigate airport risks. International airports are imposing safety measures to maintain a healthy environment for both the passengers and staff. airssist too is offering airport services with requires precautions to ensure a smooth airport journey for travelers in USA. Today we look at safety measures and precautions being implemented at by USA to battle the pandemic.

Protecting Air Travelers

Domestic Flights in the US are still operating but there has been a steep decline in demand of about 90% as compared last year. But things are taking a positive turn as people passed through TSA in USA in May has been the highest in the last two months. Travelers are advised to follow safety measures to mitigate airport risks. Here is what you can expect when traveling inside USA-

  • Maintaining the suggested social distancing is proving to be challenging on board the aircraft. It becomes crucial that you wear a mask to protect yourselves.
  • You’re allowed to carry one liquid sanitizer (up to 12 ounces) in your carry-on luggage. All other liquids and gels in carry-on luggage continue to be limited to 3.4 ounces.
  • At the TSA in some airports, you will have to place your electronic or paper boarding passes on the reader yourself, instead of handling it over to the agent.
  • TSA is also mandating travelers to put food items, belts, keys, phone etc into their carry-on luggage instead of the bin to reduce contact during screening process.
  • During domestic travel driver’s license or state-issued ID is accepted as an identification document at the TSA. But if your license or ID has expired after March 1st, 2020 and you were unable to renew it due to the pandemic, worry not. TSA is accepting expired driver’s licenses or state-issued ID a year after expiration.

Airlines health security measure


Delta airlines require that you must wear a mask covering your face during check-in, in airport lounges, boarding area, even on board the flight. You can only take it off during meals.

American Airlines-

It is mandatory to wear a face mask. The airlines have also said that they will make sure to make mask available for both crew and passengers on board. American Airlines will soon start distributing sanitizing wipes for passengers on board too.

Other Airlines-

Jet Blue Airways was the first to mandate wearing a mask onboard. United Airlines and Frontier Airlines have also made it mandatory for passengers to wear masks on board.

Travel restrictions and precautions in wake of corona virus

  • Travel restrictions imposed, allowing entry of only US citizens, permanent residents, travelers with valid US visa or authorization for travel.
  • Anyone who has traveled or even transited in the following countries in last 14 days will be denied entry in US- Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China (People’s Rep.), Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Iran, Ireland (Rep.), Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or in the United Kingdom.
  • Arriving passengers can land at select 15 international airports.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport- ATL

The world’s busiest airport is taking the required health security measure to mitigate airports risk and for protecting air travelers. ATL is going to introduce a cutting-edge hygiene tracking technology to lessen the risk of corona virus. A technology of GP Pro, the KOLO system will use sensor to ensure the restrooms are always clean, working, stocked with soap, sanitizer, toilet papers and more. The senor will send alerts on mobile device if anything is not in order.

Boston Logan International Airport- BOS

The areas of “high traffic touch points” are being constantly disinfected at BOS by cleaning professionals. In addition to this, the airport is cleaning its restroom every hour. 140 dispensers for sanitizers have been paced across the airport.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport- DFW

At DFW to mitigate airports risk many TSA checkpoints have been closed. These include- A12, A35, B9, C10, C30, E16, E33, D18, D30. But you can check the airport security page to know about open checkpoints and live waiting times to take the necessary precautions.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport- DTW

In wake of the pandemic, the DTW Destination Pass program which allowed people without a ticket to travel beyond security points have been cancelled. The airports employees are not allowed any non-essential travel to ensure their safety and the safety of the travelers.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport- FLL

At FLL there is no passenger screening for domestic flights. But this does not include travelers coming from the northeastern United States (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut).

Los Angeles International Airport- LAX

From 11th May, wearing a face mask (or any other type of face covering) has become mandatory at LAX. Along with health screening of passengers with possible exposure, LAX is ensuring cleaning of high touch areas, hourly cleaning of restrooms, and has installed hand sanitizers across the airport.

The health screening at LAX is done away from public areas. LAX have also introduced a new self-service bag drop system at its Tom Bradley terminal.

Miami International Airport- MIA

At MIA busy airport, protective equipment like plexiglass screens at check-in counters, boarding areas, TSA check points have been installed. Floor marking are also placed to ensure that passengers are maintaining proper social distancing. Dining and retail are 50% closed. When departing from MIA, face covering is mandated for passengers. In addition to this, all passenger lounges are temporarily closed.

San Francisco International Airport- SFO

At SFO too it is mandatory to cover your face. For social distancing 1200 dots in queueing areas and 2850 dots in seating areas are placed. Plastic barriers are installed at check-in, boarding areas, and other places where face to face interaction will take place.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport- SEA

Travelers must wear face covering throughout their airport journey at SEA. No more than four in an elevator and ten in a train car is allowed.

Dulles International Airport- IAD

The Silver Line Express Bus between Dulles International Airport and Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station is temporarily suspended. The USO Lounge at IAD is also closed.
