How is Qatar Preparing for The FIFA Arab Cup 2021?

The upcoming FIFA World Cup and Arab World Cup 2021 are Qatar’s chance to shine in the eyes of the world. The FIFA Arab Cup is a monumental sporting event that will feature 16 teams from across the Arab world who will compete in six different venues which will also be used for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. The 23 competing teams include Qatar, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and many more.

Football fans are passionate about supporting their teams and will most likely travel to Qatar so they can watch their favourite teams perform in person, Qatar has been very public with its plans to meet the increased travel demand and limit the risks posed by traveling during the pandemic.

Qatar has immunized about 85% of its citizens and will require ticketholders to be fully vaccinated with any of the vaccines approved by Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health in order to travel and watch the games. In a FIFA press release in July, they stated the following, “In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and similarly as for the FIFA Club World Cup 2020™ and the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021™ qualifiers held in June, the host country will provide the required safeguards to protect the health and safety of all involved in the competition. Attendees must follow the travel advice from the State of Qatar and the guidance from the Ministry of Public Health.”.

The status has to be green on the Ehteraz mobile app in order to allow the general public to enter the stadiums, additionally, all visitor’s attending the FIFA Arab Cup matches must always wear a mask inside the stadiums.

Qatar’s ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, stated that the delay in World Cup preparations was very limited and that the state is in talks with multiple vaccine suppliers to ensure that all visitors are vaccinated. While talking with newspapers, the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Thani said, “We are currently negotiating with a company to provide one million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in order to immunize and vaccinate some of those coming to Qatar”, Qatar’s officials have clearly stated that they plan on holding a COVID-free tournament and this plan includes supplying visitors with a vaccine if they are not already immunized, although the method for administering the vaccine is not yet clear, this proves that Qatar is ready to face any challenges that might arise.

Qatar is spending billions of dollars on infrastructure construction and the expansion of The Hamad International Airport (DOH) in order to accommodate the increased travel demand brought on by both the FIFA World and Arab Cups and to keep up with the continued passenger growth. The Hamad International Airport (DOH) is expected to accommodate 58 million passengers annually by the FIFA World Cup 2022.
